Nori

Joaquin continues to eat more and more variety and textures of foods. His absolute FAVORITE snack is nori. Yes.....indeed. He loves dried seaweed.

We break it up into little pieces and he readily opens his mouth and let's it quickly dissolve. It's a great way to get a "green" vegetable in him. As a matter of fact, it's Diego and Mateo's snack of choice as well.

Another fun snack we've discovered is fruit leather. All natural, organic, 100% dried fruit strips that I break into small pieces and Joaquin gobbles it up. He still continues to eat brown rice puffs as well so now we have a nice variety of easy to travel with snacks that don't spoil or require any special handling. These snacks and his straw sippy cup full of water are all we need and we are ready to go!

Joaquin is still officially vegan and I'm still breastfeeding a couple times a day. He has never had dairy, soy, meat, wheat, banana, nightshades, citrus or corn. He eats a variety of fruit (apples, berries, mangos, peaches, pears, plums) and vegetables (peas, spinach, squash, sweet potato, pumpkin, carrots, turnips, broccoli, beets) and he eats flax meal, brown rice, teff, coconut/olive/grapeseed oils, lentils, beans (kidney, black, pinto) and oats. He is thriving, healthy, has tons of energy and has a really gorgeous glow to his skin!

The only supplements we use currently are B-12 once a week, occasionally some probiotics and when I feel like it a multivitamin.

I highly recommend trying the seaweed. It might become your little one's favorite new snack!

i've never heard of nori - i wonder if our whole foods store in carmel, indiana would carry it? also, what are "nightshades"? actually i just looked it up on google... i am having a strange blog reading night. laurie (days with dylan) talked about "jimmies" on cassidy's ice cream and i have never heard of jimmies... i looked them up and they are "sprinkles" - in my entire 32 years i have never heard "sprinkles" referred to as "jimmies". now i have learned about "nightshades" and "jimmies" all in the same night!

I'd never thought of it before. John Michael loves flavorful food and I'll bet he'd go for that, too. THanks for the tip :-)

mmmm...I love seaweed! My kids will not eat any type of sushi, but they will eat rice with the seaweed wrap. However, I don't think I've tried it with Lillian yet...gotta try it!

Now, your little man has the healthiest diet ever! Lillian just likes to eat...whatever it is! But, I don't do bananas either with her. It makes her extremely constipated. But, what are nightshades?

BTW...Lillian's PT friend is a nutritionist who has been sort of working with me. And I asked her about the China Study, which she didn't know about. However, she is not reading it out of interest!

I've been thinking about trying nori... it dissolves quickly? Sheridan will tolerate the brown rice puffs, but he's not a huge fan, and I need a couple items he LIKES that will dissolve easily to avoid a choking problem. About a month or so ago I started Sheridan on organic brown rice and organic oats (and I've been mixing ground flaxseeds into 1 or 2 items a day for him). I'm just desperate to find some "finger foods' so he can practice his fine-motor and self-feeding skills - and it needs to be safe (dissolve quickly) and taste good so it's motivating! I'll try the nori and see what Master Sheridan says :)

Interesting! I'll have to try that. My brother-in-law, who is half Japanese, will be proud if his nephew (Matthew) tries seaweed. I used to snack on this when I was a kid too.

I've never thought of giving B nori or fruit leather...I'll have to add those to my list! Sounds like J eats a great variety of really healthy foods. I wish my diet was as healthy!!

I had forgotten about the seaweed. We need to try that! That is great you are still bf. Goldie was gluten free, dairy free for the first 18 months. She is still dairy free.

I forgot to mention, we also like freeze dried fruit to snack on. Dissolve quickly and no extra ingredients.

great ideas, Jenn! I am definitely going to try this because I am almost positive BOTH of my kids will gobble it up ;)

Somewhere I read that kids with lower tone really dig stronger tasting foods. I know that holds true for Kira. We need to try the nori, too. Thanks for the tip!

I'm so glad to see this post, now I know what Shalynn keeps talking about. She said she ate seaweed at school with Diego and it was yummy. We joked at Santa Cruz about eating the seaweed on the beach, lol ;).
